Welcome to the World of Aikido: Beyond our dojo in Salt Lake!

You just started training at Aikido of Salt Lake, and your world is focused on your peers and local classes. But did you know that when you step onto our mat, you are automatically connected to a global community?

The Expanding Circle:

The world of Aikido is much bigger than just our dojo. You might start noticing seminars offered by our organization or others, bringing teachers and students from far away. This includes our direct connection to the Maruyama Institute in São Paulo, Brazil, where the founder of Aikido of Salt Lake trained 35 years ago under Roberto Nohiko Maruyama sensei. This affiliation, rooted in personal history, means we are linked internationally.

The Global Family:

This network spans countries like Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Colombia, and the US. People who train in Aikido are aware they are part of a very special group—they are your brothers and sisters. You can feel completely at home training in Morocco or another US location because the etiquette and fundamental practice are the same wherever you go.

Speaking the Language of Ki:

We all "speak Aikido," a language that transcends national boundaries. This common language allows you to understand others quickly just by practicing the techniques. Aikido itself is an inner martial art; it is not about trying to beat people up. It is a more sophisticated practice focused on connecting with people, resolving conflict, and feeling vital energies like Ki. The whole world of Aikido started at a very clear point in the past with Morihei Ueshiba, who developed many teachers who, in turn, developed more teachers—a vital transmission of knowledge that defines our lineage.

Welcome to the journey!
