Understanding Our Roots: Why Lineage Matters to Aikido of Salt Lake

Ever wonder where the knowledge shared at Aikido of Salt Lake truly comes from? It's not just local; it’s a global lineage that defines our practice!

The Lineage Explained:

  • The Direct Teacher: Our teacher, Roberto Nohiko Maruyama sensei, is the manifestation of the lineage for Aikido of Salt Lake. The founder of our dojo began training with Maruyama sensei 35 years ago in São Paulo, Brazil.

  • The Brazilian Connection: Maruyama sensei received his teaching from Kawaii sensei. Kawaii sensei was sent to Brazil, reportedly by Hombu Dojo, to promote the art of Aikido. He was deeply involved in establishing the Brazilian and South American federations of Aikido.

  • The Fastest Path: This line (from O Sensei, through Kawaii sensei, to Maruyama sensei) represents the fastest connection back to the art's origins.

  • International Affiliation: This history led to our official dojo affiliation, cemented when Maruyama sensei, upon receiving his seventh-degree black belt from Hombu Dojo, began conducting international seminars in Salt Lake.

Why This Matters:

Lineage is more than just history; it is the vital transmission of knowledge that changes and gains added value as it evolves from one teacher to the next. We don't own our Aikido; instead, the dojo acts as a transfer mechanism for this knowledge, carrying what started with O Sensei to inspire and influence students down the line, generation after generation.

Welcome to our lineage!
